IQOS heating vs burning

Heating instead of burning

Where there is smoke, there is usually fire. That is why a smoke free future cannot contain fire. In this article we will first look at the process of combustion in regular cigarettes and then show you the innovative technology your IQOS device is using instead. Got curious? Then let us take a look together at the science behind IQOS.

The problem of combustion

When a cigarette is lit, the compounds in it are heated to over 600° C degrees, when taking a draw even up to 800° C degrees. Combustion at such high temperatures releases up to 6000 different chemicals, 100 of which are proven to be harmful to human health. Furthermore, many people find an intense smell of smoke very unpleasant.

The IQOS solution: pollutant reduction through Heat-not-Burn Technology

In years of scientific research, a new technology, which heats tobacco instead of burning it, was developed for IQOS. The Heat-not-Burn Technology ensures that there is no combustion. This reduces harmful substances by up to 95%.*

When using IQOS, an aerosol – instead of smoke – occurs. Different scientific experiments have shown that indoor air quality does not deteriorate when an IQOS device is being used – the effect of your IQOS device on the quality of air inside a room is similar to the effect of burning candles. Therefore, no one in the smoker’s surrounding is being harmed or disturbed.

*”95% less” means the average decline in concentration of several harmful substances (not nicotine) compared to the smoke of a reference cigarette (3R4F). This does not necessarily mean that the health risk is 95% reduced. IQOS is not risk free. The tobacco used in it contains nicotine, which is addictive.
