On 10 November, we will celebrate World Science Day together. This day highlights the immense importance of science and research for our daily lives. For us at IQOS, science plays a central role because it helps us offer adult smokers an alternative to cigarettes.

 

The commitment of scientific innovation  

IQOS is owned by Philip Morris International (PMI), a company that is a leader in scientific innovation in the industry. Since 2008, PMI has invested over 12.5 billion US dollars in research and development of smokeless products. These investments have a clear goal: to offer adult smokers a scientifically proven, less harmful alternative to cigarettes. More than 1,580 scientists, engineers and technicians are working tirelessly to further develop products like IQOS.

 

The Heat-not-Burn-Technology 

Did you know that most of the harmful substances in cigarette smoke are produced by burning tobacco? This is exactly where the innovative heat-not-burn technology that PMI has developed for IQOS comes in. Instead of burning the tobacco, as is the case with conventional cigarettes, IQOS only heats it. This produces an aerosol rather than smoke. IQOS emits 95% less harmful substances compared to cigarettes. “95% less” represents the average reduction in the concentrations of the 9 harmful substances recommended by the World Health Organization for reduction in cigarette smoke, not including nicotine. Important information: This does not necessarily correspond to a 95% risk reduction. IQOS is not risk-free. 

Many scientific studies have shown that the reduction of combustion makes a decisive difference.
